Hi, has anyone successfully returned to an RN/LPN model in the acute care hospital setting or in the psychiatric hospital setting? Or if you tried and it didn’t work, would still like to know, so we can maybe gain some pearls of wisdom!

Thanks, Miriam

Miriam,

We utilize LPN's at HPMC and it is going very well. We have to limit the number of LPN's on a shift of course, but beyond that, they are in assignments like RN's. Their oversight is the Charge Nurse on the unit. We would hire many more if we could. They are not as easy to hire as you would think due to pay. They can actually get higher pay at nursing homes than they do in hospital acute care. The LPN ratio is much higher in the longer term care items of course, but it works best for us with LPN's who are seeking to get their RN and want the experience. We love our LPN's!

The NCBON also puts on a great glass on the difference between LPN/RN. They can do more than they used to. I don't know if they still do it with Covid, but it was a great day trip and we sent all of our leaders down for it.

Hope this helps!
